Facilities Assistant

Nature of Work

The Facilities Department is responsible for providing an uplifted environment through maintaining the buildings, equipment, and land of Dorje Denma Ling.  As a member of the facilities staff, this position takes direction from the facilities manager and supports the Dorje Denma Ling environment throughout the season.

Providing a well maintained and uplifted environment supports the lives and meditation practice of residents and visitors. The Facilities Assistant provides the skills and labour to keep the Dorje Denma Ling buildings and grounds in good repair, clean and uplifted. In the Shambhala view, this invites the Dralas and supports us in our practice.

Tasks

The Facilities Assistant may be asked to:

  • Assist with general maintenance and repair of buildings and structures.
  • Help build necessary structures including platforms, cabins, boardwalks, etc. to accommodate participant and program needs.
  • Maintain or repair DDL vehicles and equipment, provide grounds maintenance, landscaping, snow removal, trash removal and recycling.
  • With a valid license, drive a company vehicle for errands, procuring supplies, and in other ways of supporting the functions of Dorje Denma Ling.
  • Assist with program set-up and take down.
  • Perform related work as required.

Expectations

The Facilities Assistant should:

  • Have a regular meditation practice.
  • Have experience and interest in Shambhala or Buddhist programs of study and practice.
  • Desire to live and work in a practice community.
  • Be able to communicate clearly and effectively with co-workers, program participants and DDL staff.
  • Be able to work well under stressful circumstances.
  • Be able to work effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Be capable of lifting 50 pounds.
  • Be capable of wield construction and handyman tools such as hammers, power tools, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Have a valid driver’s license.
  • Have experience in the building trades.

Evaluation Process

After 30 days following start day, the Facilities Manager or Personnel Manager will meet with the Facilities Assistant to do a performance review and discuss whether the individual fulfills the position expectations.
