Garden Assistant

Nature of Work

Working closely with the Executive Director and Personnel Manager, the Garden Assistant, is responsible for implementing our garden plan and helping to ensure that we have another great garden year.

The Garden Assistant reports to the Personnel Manager.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Clearing and preparing for garden planting.
  • Requesting resources, including seed, plants, and mulch as required.
  • Planting and tending garden, including ensuring routine watering.
  • Communicating with neighbors to obtain more plants and other supplies.
  • Overseeing staff and support in the garden.
  • Overseeing and training volunteers as available.
  • Planning with kitchen for vegetables to be used by DDL kitchen.
  • Maintaining landscape around garden.
  • Communicating garden needs to Executive Director.

Compensation

The Garden Assistant is classified as a part-time, core-staff position working a minimum 15 hours per week. If a resident staff member living on the land, you will be charged for board and lodging which will be deducted from your semi-monthly pay.

Other benefits include ample time for daily meditation practice, access to local Meditation Instructors, opportunities to participate in dharma classes and retreats, and free tuition for programs at Dorje Denma Ling (if your schedule permits).

Evaluation Process

After two months of employment, there will be a process of review for the Garden Assistant. This process will be designed and led by the Personnel Manager and will include a review of performance, communication and practices.
