Annual Nine-Day Mahamudra Retreat

Mahamudra and the Dzogchen equivalent, Trekchö, are known as the “path of wisdom.” Based on the transmission of the nature of mind by the guru, these teachings are the epitome of the practice lineages, which value the simplicity of direct experience over scholarship.
This 9-day retreat will draw on the structure of Pointing Out the Dharmakaya by the ninth Karmapa, the liturgy used in the Kagyu three-year retreat. Our practice will be enhanced by pith instructions from Tashi Namgyal, Yeshe Tsögyal, Mipham the Great, Khenpo Gangshar and other lineage masters.
To be authentic, mahamudra must be infused with devotion, so each day will include supplications for Sakyongs I and II, Padmasambhava and Yeshe Tsögyal, and a guru yoga of your choice.
What to Expect
This deep practice retreat will be mostly in silence, with ample time for circle conversation, lujong exercises, interviews and personal study. It will also include practice of the Stroke of Ashe.
Who Should Attend
Participants must be vajrayana practitioners who have received the pointing out transmission from the Vidyadhara, Sakyong Mipham, the Vajra Regent or the Dorje Löppön, Lodrö Dorje on behalf of the Vidyadhara. All participants must begin at the beginning and commit to the entire retreat.
Covid Considerations
The teacher for this retreat has requested that all participants be fully vaccinated. We therefore request that you register only if you are (or will be) fully vaccinated by the time the retreat begins. This will help us to provide a safe and comfortable teaching container for this retreat.
As stated in our Covid Policy, we strongly recommend that all visitors to the land be fully vaccinated, and we reserve the right to modify restrictions if a situation arises — such as this one, where it seems appropriate to do so. An early student of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Richard served as acharya for Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche for 20 years. He completed the first three-year retreat at Gampo Abbey, and now teaches Shambhala Buddhist meditation courses full time. Richard and his wife Liz reside in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
