“Four practices are the best of methods” (Slogan 15) from Atisha’s Lojong, or mind-training, teachings offers a path for learning from our mistakes, our misdeeds, and our harmful conduct. The traditional practice of the Four Powers is part of the Mahayana path, and therefore appropriate for many practitioners.

The essence of the practice is fearless reflection on one’s own unskillful actions. This process begins with invoking the Buddhas and bodhisattvas as examples and witnesses and ends with open meditation. Personally, I have found the Four Powers very useful in looking at my own actions with clarity and curiosity. These two sessions will offer background on this cycle of practices, instruction, guided practice and conversation on the Four Powers. It will be helpful to continue the practice during the week between class sessions.

Suggested for participants:  Refuge vow, familiarity with and practice of peaceful abiding meditation. If you want to prepare in advance, read Training the Mind and Cultivating Loving-Kindness by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Start Where You Are by Pema Chodron, or The Practice of Lojong by Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche.
